Lysander Park Development

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland visited Newtownards to mark the beginning of a £4.5million housing development and investment programme.

During the visit to Westwinds and Glen estates, the Minister met local community representatives. First stop was Lysander Park where Minister McCausland began the transformation of Lysander Park by starting demolition of vacant properties to make way for 16, high quality, energy efficient social homes, to be built by Ark Housing Association.

Continuing on to Glen estate, Minister McCausland met with members of the local community group and walked through the estate, which will soon benefit from Housing Executive double glazing and kitchen replacement schemes.

The final stop was Glenbrook Road, where the Minister cut the first sod on a new housing scheme by Ulidia Housing Association which will see the construction of 10 new homes.

Minister McCausland said: “These really are new beginnings for Newtownards. The demolition of the Lysander Park flats makes way for much needed new homes and eliminates what was a blight on the area and a focus for anti social behaviour.

“In the Glen estate, I am delighted to say that the Glenward Community Development Association have been fully involved with and in support of the new build scheme since day one. Ulidia Housing Association has consulted and liaised closely with the community regarding the design and layout of this scheme, which will provide much needed additional social housing in an area of high housing need. It is cooperation and consultation such as this that helps to build healthy, happy communities.”
