Cloughy Pollution – NI Water Fined

Northern Ireland Water Ltd (NIWL) was fined a total of £4,000 plus court costs of £31 at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court today for contravening the Department’s consent conditions.

On 23 May 2010, a Water Quality Inspector acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency noted that a waterway which flows towards the beach at Cloughy had a foul odour. The source was traced to Cloughy South Sewage Pumping Station (SPS), which is owned and operated by NIWL.

On 30 May 2010, an inspector acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency again investigated an incident at the same location and observed untreated sewage in the waterway. This was causing a grey plume in the waterway downstream.

It was found that the telemetry alarm system was not maintained and tested on a regular basis which is a clear breach of the Department’s consent conditions. This led to an overflow of untreated sewage to the waterway.
